MUSEUM ECONOMICS

POLISH-BRITISH CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOPS FOR MUSEUM EXPERTS

Project under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland

25-26 November 2010 (Thursday-Friday)

A Polish-British conference entitled ‘Museum Economics’ will be held on 25-26 November 2010 in Warsaw. The conference is a result of the co-operation between the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Mazovia Region Centre of Culture and Arts, the Polish National Committee ICOM, the Wilanow Palace Museum, the British Embassy in Warsaw and the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw.

The purpose of the conference is to share experience, best practice and knowledge of legal and economic aspects of running a modern museum; the modern museum which is perceived as a meeting place for almost all areas of our civilisation – culture and science where all the collections (not only museum artefacts) have a defined material and immaterial value. The conference organisers believe that ‘economy of honesty’, ethics and mission in the context of a museum are not in contradiction to economic and strategic thinking. The conference will serve as a forum for discussion about how to find the best fit between those idealist assumptions and the economic reality.

On the first day of the conference, there will be three themed sessions composed of Polish and British presentations, case studies and structured discussions, which will be recorded.

The second day will consist of workshops in small groups which will be dedicated to the practical aspects of daily functioning of a museum.

The conference will be accompanied by an exhibition of British and Polish companies offering different technologies and programmes supporting such areas as e.g. education or documentation and other statutory activities of a museum.

Post-conference materials will be published in the form of a book.

The conference is part of a larger project entitled “Towards the modern museum”, which was initiated in 2008 by the Mazovia Region Centre of Culture and Arts. The project continues in the form of conferences, workshops, courses and seminars for museum experts.
